Make An Impact

Breast cancer only gets a lot of media attention in the month of October, even though cancer kills thousands of people year round. Early detection is instrumental in saving lives - survival rates go up to 98% if caught early. In this era of social media and easy information access, it is especially easy to disseminate information about early warning signs.

PYM was started on Facebook to do exactly that. People tend to think that breast cancer is something that happens only to others, that it is hereditary, that only older people get it. Yet everyone knows someone who's had cancer. It is time we fought back.
PYM aims to do that primarily through the PYM Design and Win contest. Since mothers are usually too busy to worry about their health, the campaign targets children for 3 reasons.
1. They grow up to be more informed adults
2. They can use their pester power to make their moms do a self exam/mammogram
3. They are usually on social media and could be reached at zero cost.

The entries for 2012 included skits, dances, videos and posters which can be viewed on our facebook page. 20 year old Mahesh Raghavan’s video won 2 tickets to Europe in 2011. Avon presented gift hampers and certificates to all 32 participants. We received over 95 videos and posters in 2012. 8 year old Aaditya won the contest. We distributed prizes worth Dh 12000 in 2013 from Borders, AVON, Etihad Airways and Imation.

Although it is a zero cost campaign, PYM is making a big impact, and is one of the nominees for the 2012 ADCB Emirates Woman Awards. In this age of information technology no one should lose their mom just because she ignored the early signs of breast cancer. I invite the students of the world to unite for this cause. So tweet/BBM and FB about PYM Design and win contest and the Protect Your Mom Campaign. Be creative for a cause! We would love to hear from you
